"Lukas...you're drunk." She sighed, taking his arm and putting it around her, helping him to his feet.
"I'm okay Luna...." He stumbled, his foot hitting a chair leg.
"Uh huh...right." She put an arm around his waist to keep him steady, and the two slowly walked out of the bar.
"What...what time is it?" The cool night air hit his face, making him recoil, yet more present.
"It's near 1 am." His tall and lanky form pressed into her, thank god she was used to lifting and moving patients. It was clear he needed support to stand, let alone walk.
"1 am? Shouldn't...you be sleeping? Lu I...I can walk myself home! You work at 8 tomorrow!" He tried to jerk away, but it came out more as a stumble. Luna tightened her grip and sighed.
"I got a call saying you were slumped over and barely mobile. And that's what I saw when I walked in...there was no way you were walking home." Now recentering his balance, the two kept walking down the path to their home.
"But—"
"I don't mind Luke, really. I'd rather help you home than have you wandering aimlessly. Though...I don't think I've ever seen you this drunk before. Why did you drink so heavily? They even said they had to cut you off..."
"You're saying... a lot and asking a lot...and I don't remember..."
Liar. A voice in the back of his head echoed.
"You need to grow up. Running around on Earth like this like a fool. You're taking your life as a joke."
That man was gone at long last, but his words were still seared into Luke's head.
"How long till you take responsibility? When will you stop using these humans as playthings?"
"You've lost your way, no respectable demon would act like this. Hiding their identity like they're ashamed of it."
He grasped his head, feeling himself drown in those words.
"Luke? You okay?"
"....feeling a headache coming on."
"We're almost home honey."
The next few moments were spent in silence as they continued down the path, their home in sight. As they reached the door Luna supported him with one arm while she fished out her keys. She pushed the door open and helped him inside. Sitting him down on a kitchen chair she went towards the sink.
"Here, drink." She set down a glass of water in front of him.
"...thank you." He took the water.
"That one human you got wrapped around your arm, you know she's not worthy of you. You trying to stoop to her level is sickening."
He squeezed his eyes shut and shook his head, slamming the glass down. Himself being dragged into it was enough, why did that vile man have to bring her into it as well?
"Easy does it...It's alright Luke."
"I'm okay, really Luna. I...I'm sorry I caused so much trouble for you." Letting out a long slow sigh, he opened his eyes and looked back up at Luna.
She's heard those words as well, I wonder how she's taken it.
"Well, there's a first. I've never heard you apologize for causing trouble before." She teased, a small smile grazing her lips.
"Heh..."
She wouldn't ever say if it bothered her of course. Certainly not now.
Slowly he stood up, using the chair as support. As he swung his head to look at her, he was hit with a realization.
That man was wrong. Completely and utterly wrong. She wasn't someone he had to stoop to. Nor was she unworthy of him. She's seen every single side of him now and still accepted him with open arms. Nothing even changed between them when his secret was dragged to the surface in front of her. She continued to love him as if nothing ever changed. Even giving up sleep to come and help him home when he made another dumb mistake. As far as she was concerned, this was just another of his drunken antics, with no profound meaning. That fact alone elated him. Despite being an all-powerful demon, a little human doctor was still the one to support and love him.
"Nothing really....changed huh?" He laughed, stepping forward towards her, stumbling on the chair while doing so. Wrapping his arms around her, he squeezed her tightly.
"Hm? What do you mean?" His eyes were full of a soft vulnerability she'd rarely seen before. One that both worried yet softened her at the same time.
"My dream girl...." He whispered softly.
"What are you going on about now?" She laughed, now her head buried in his chest. A gentle kiss was pressed to the top of her head. Looking up once more, she saw tears in his eyes.
"What's wrong!"
"Oh, nothing...nothing at all. I mean it I'm just....so happy....with you. I'm realllyyyyy happy to be with you Luna. You have...really no clue..." The tears slowly trickled down his face while he grinned ear to ear.
A small blush grew and bloomed on her face as she smiled back at him.
"That...means a lot, Luke." He couldn't help but chuckle, now feeling her hands caress his face, gently wiping the tears away.
My life isn't a joke. I'm so happy, isn't that what matters?
I'd be happy for the rest of my life if I could spend it seeing her wake up next to me.
"Luna...thank you. Thank you so much, for sharing your life with me. For caring for me for...for loving me. Oh, I love you so much, darling..." Squeezing her tighter, he kept sobbing, rendering her efforts useless.
"Oh, Luke...I don't know what I'd do without you. I'm happy to share a life with you...and to care and love you. You mean a lot to me, honey. I'll always be here...through the good and bad...no matter what." She hugged him back, holding back her own tears of joy. A being of many words, who always knew what to say to her, even in this state.
"I promise...I'll marry you. I know you've wanted it for a while...and I want it too. I'll marry you and make you the happiest woman aliveeeeeee..."
Her heart skipped a few beats at his confession. Suddenly she felt him grow 20x heavier on her, and she looked up to see him passed out. Quickly she shifted, now holding him up, but just barely. Carefully she dragged him over to the bed, throwing him onto it and pushing him to one side as he lay there unconscious.
"Huh...talk about a delayed blackout." Her heart was still aflutter from his words, and she stood there for a few moments just watching over him. It was a very rare occurrence to see him asleep before her.
The clock struck 2 a.m., reminding her of work in the next 6 hours, and she finally curled up next to him in their bed. As she shut her eyes, now nestled in the darkness and silence of the room, listening to the soothing rhythm that was his breathing.
Yet before she drifted off, she whispered one last thing to the sleeping body next to her.
"I'd be more than happy to be your wife, Lukas."
